Off the coast of Chania, Crete lies a small uninhabited island known as Thodorou (Agioi Theodoroi). On the surface, it appears to be a tranquil nature reserve—home to the protected kri-kri goats—but beneath the waves, a secret piece of history rests silently: a German Junkers 52 aircraft from World War II. Accessible only by private boat and visible while snorkeling or diving, this wreck adds an element of historical intrigue to your coastal adventure.
A Glimpse into WWII History
During the Battle of Crete in May 1941, Nazi Germany launched one of its most significant airborne invasions. German paratroopers descended upon the island, targeting key airfields and ports, including Chania. Among the aircraft deployed was the Junkers 52 (JU-52), a tri-motor transport plane used to ferry troops and supplies.
One such aircraft was shot down or malfunctioned and crash-landed near Thodorou Island. Today, its skeletal remains lie under about 15 meters of water, relatively intact and now part of the underwater landscape.
Visiting Thodorou by Private Boat
Due to its status as a nature reserve, Thodorou Island is closed to the general public. However, private boat tours can anchor nearby, allowing guests to snorkel above the site or explore the waters around the island. Some boat operators offer guided snorkeling tours with a brief history of the wreck.
What you can expect:
- Short boat ride from Chania’s Venetian harbor
- Snorkeling gear included
- Calm waters ideal for observing underwater sites
- Possible sightings of kri-kri goats on the island cliffs
